THORN: Critics fired up about ‘Tree of Smoke’

This will be worth your time jill Sobule The Latest Musician To Embrace New Music Business Models Last month we wrote about musician Kristin Hersh embracing a version of the new business model we suggested for musicians way back in 2003. It’s a model where the musician can actually embrace file sharing and do better because of it, by focusing on using the file sharing to sell more scarce goods, such as specific songs or access to the musician. One of my favorite ideas in that discussion was that the musician could offer up that he or she would play a backyard concert for a supporter. I’ve yet to see anyone else pick up on that suggestion… until now. Well-known singer-songwriter Jill Sobule has just announced her plans for a new album and it involves a website that allows people to buy in at different levels from $25 (you get the CD before it’s released) all the way up to $10,000 (you actually get to sing or participate on the CD). At the $5,000 level, Jill will come and perform at your home. I still think the lowest level ($25) is a bit too high, but the various levels and the rewards at each level do seem about right for the model. It’s not clear how Sobule feels about file sharing on top of this, but it’s clear that she’s really embraced this new business model — so I’m hopeful that it works out for her. So here’s a question: will all the folks who say that taking an idea without giving someone credit for it is “theft” claim that Sobule “stole” this idea from me or will they recognize how ridiculous that is and how we’re all better off when infinite goods are spread freely?

FBI Not Good At Paying Wiretap Bills

Filed under: Uncategorized — gates @ 7:47 am

We would also recommend this While the FBI has regularly decided that court orders aren’t necessary for wiretaps, it is a bit surprising to find out that it seems to feel the same way about paying the bills for wiretaps. Newly released info show that the FBI often failed to pay its wiretapping bills, leading one telco to cut off the FBI’s wiretaps until it finally paid up. Given how screwed up the FBI’s computer systems are, perhaps it’s not surprising that they don’t have an acceptable accounts payable system either.

This resulted in protests, phone calls, emails, letters, faxes and many other forms of communication as concerned Canadian citizens made it clear to their government that they did not appreciate being sold out while having copyright reform turned into the Entertainment Industry Welfare Act. While the Industry Minister Jim Prentice tried to weakly defend the forthcoming bill, it seems that the outpouring of protest has resulted in a temporary victory, as it appears that the introduction of the bill will be delayed. Hopefully, the delay is to actually spend some time understanding the issues, rather than trying to wait for those pesky citizens to quiet down so the bill can be introduced with less fanfare.

I also noted that; gPS Devices Damaging Thousands Of Bridges In the past, we’ve seen stories of GPS navigation devices not knowing enough about local roads that the directions were often inappropriate for the type of vehicle — especially trucks. It had resulted in signs being placed on roads, begging drivers to ignore their own navigation devices. Engadget now points us to a report from the UK suggesting that bad directions from navigation devices was responsible for damage to about 2,000 bridges. That seems like quite a lot. The claim is that the devices direct trucks who are much too heavy to go over bridges not designed for that kind of load. Work is now being done to get the navigation companies to at least understand the types of roads and bridges, and how that corresponds to different types of vehicles.

.Did you know that Roman means romans (used with a sing. verb) Abbr. Rom. or Rm See table at Bible. I heard a rumour yet Another Report Of Free Label Music That Isn’t Last week, we noted that the press couldn’t stop talking about Last.fm’s supposed effort to offer “free” music, when the details showed it was a lot less than the press made it out to be. You’d think that maybe they would be more careful the next time around. However, when you combine the words “free” and “music” it appears that some folks in the press just can’t help themselves. Thus, when a company named Qtrax announced “free” file sharing, with the backing of all four major labels, plus iPod compatibility, the press ran with it. The Associated Press and Reuters both ran with it… though, at least the Associated Press has quickly started backtracking after the various record labels all started denying any kind of deal with Qtrax. They admit they’re talking, but no deals have been signed — meaning that Qtrax jumped the gun, as did the reporters who ran with the announcement. Even if the labels do come around on this one, it’s a plan that will go nowhere fast. It involves crippling DRM and annoying advertising that won’t even be close to effective. This is a non-story turned into a story by the use of two words: “free” and “music.”
