Google aims for renewable energy priced below coal (Reuters)

Filed under: Uncategorized — gates @ 8:43 pm

Furthermore Reuters - Google Inc said on
Tuesday the Web services and online advertising group plans to
spend hundreds of millions of dollars to help drive the cost of
electricity derived from renewable energy below coal prices. Somthing like that eU About Ready To Allow Phone Calls While Flying While the US government has basically decided not to allow mobile phone calls from airplanes due to complaints from people worried about sitting next to people who are too chatty, the EU seems to be taking a more reasonable approach. Recognizing that the technology problems with calling from airplanes have basically been solved, the EU is ready to let airlines decide for themselves how they want to handle the issue. In other words, rather than having the government decree that people shouldn’t suffer sitting next to half a conversation, why not let the market decide? If people are really annoyed by it, then airlines can simply advertise themselves as “mobile-phone free” or set up “mobile-phone free” sections.Did you know that While means the time, effort, or trouble taken in doing something: The project wasn’t worth my while.. This also saved me time energyCo Names John Loyack CEO MSN MoneyCentral - FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Unregulated energy company EnergyCo, a joint venture of electric utility PNM Resources and Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates’ private investment vehicle Cascade Investment LLC, on Monday named John R. Loyack chief executive …Did you know that John means something that has no quantitative value; zero: a score of two to nothing.. There is a old saying korea’s Internet Addiction Bootcamps Mistargeted For years, we’ve pointed out how ridiculous it is for people to be blaming internet addictions for things, when almost every case of “internet addiction” that’s demonstrated that the actual problem was something else, and the internet usage was just a way of “escaping” from those other problems. It didn’t help that many of the big supporters of “internet addiction” happen to be the people (i.e., doctors) who are most likely to profit from such a thing existing. On top of that, reports have shown that so-called “internet addictions” tend not to be particularly harmful, and it makes you wonder what the big deal is. However, more recently, we’re seeing some governments take the “threat” seriously. The NY Times is running an article about a “boot camp” in Korea to help cure kids of internet addiction, incorrectly suggesting it’s the first such camp in the world. Earlier this year, we pointed out that China was opening a summer camp for internet addicts, which followed Chinese attempts to cure internet addiction with electric acupuncture, shock therapy and special halfway houses.

Still, as you read the NY Times piece about the Korean boot camp, you see that the folks running the camp are marking the same assumption: that it’s the internet or computers to blame, and therefore, the solution must be to remove kids from the internet and computers entirely. This is fighting the symptom, not the disease. There’s a reason why people started spending so much time online, and simply taking away access probably won’t change that. The one kid that the article discusses in any detail started spending more time online because he wasn’t very popular in school. Taking away the internet isn’t going to fix that. There’s no doubt that some people can spend way too much time at their computers, and it can potentially damage other parts of their lives — but simply blaming the internet and pulling it away completely seems like a cure that’s not likely to help very much. If the real problems that lead the person to spend so much time online aren’t dealt with, then they will simply manifest themselves in some other manner soon enough. Calling something an internet addiction seems easy enough (and it’s catchy, so it gets headlines), but if people are treating the internet part, rather than the real problems, it’s not doing anyone any good.

The Ongoing Battle Between Anonymity And Libel Online

Filed under: Uncategorized — gates @ 4:43 pm

On the other hand There’s just something about being behind a keyboard and a screen that make people do nutty things, especially if they think that they’re appearing to be anonymous. However, that can also run right into questions concerning libel. Over in the UK, where libel laws are much stricter than here in the US, it should come as little surprise that people who thought they were being anonymous are now being unmasked by those accusing them of libel. In one case, it was unveiled that the guy behind a website trashing a specific housing organization just so happened to run a competing housing organization. In another case, disgruntled fans of a UK football (soccer) team are having their identities handed over to the court for smearing the names of officials in charge of the club. At least in that case, the judge tried to limit whose names were being handed over, leaving out those whose statements “were merely ‘abusive’ or likely to be understood as jokes” alone to remain anonymous. Still, libel is increasingly a funny sort of crime in this world where everyone’s a publisher and everyone has an opinion. Accusing someone of libel in court can often backfire, as it only calls that much more attention to the actions that led to the original claims. It seems that it’s often better to simply respond to the false claims with proof that they’re not true, and then leave people to make their own decisions. What a wonderfull idea microsoft Files Counterfeiting Claims Against 20 Software Dealers

This information might be a better choice news Outlets Decide Not To Give Rugby World Cup Free Publicity Just earlier today we had a post on how the NFL still thinks it can tell news organizations how they can do their job, in spite of fair use, and well, logic and reason. The Rugby World Cup kicks off Friday, and its organizers are involved in a similar spat with media groups covering the event. Back in April, organizers tried to put restrictions on the number of photos news outlets could publish online, and also how they were published (lest anything cover up a sponsor’s logo). Major media outlets, including the AP, Reuters and AFP aren’t playing ball, though, and are boycotting the event until the dispute is resolved. As much as the World Cup organizers would like to think they don’t care, they depend on widespread media coverage and the free publicity it generates to drive their money machines. They say they’re acting to protect companies that have paid for certain broadcasting rights, but what they’re really trying to protect are the huge fees these companies have paid. They seem to think that letting news outlets print photos online threaten things like TV rights, but it would seem that the opposite is true. By reducing the amount of news coverage for the event — which acts as publicity — they’re going to hurt the amount of interest people have in it. In turn, perhaps they won’t be nearly as interested to follow it on TV or radio or anywhere else rightsholders have paid to deliver it. That’s what really threatens their revenues, not the fact that people can go online and see photos from matches.Did you know that World means a sphere of human activity or interest: the world of sports.

Thanksgiving Miracle: Gates’ Millions To Slum Dwellers

Filed under: Uncategorized — gates @ 12:43 pm

This is defintely worth your time and money Louisville Courier-Journal - Call it, if you will, the unlikeliest marriage in the world — high-flying capitalist dollars earned by multibillionaire Bill Gates flowing to a network of Asian, African and Latin American slum dwellers who are often obliged to struggle for shelter … This is also something to look at congress Moves Forward With Required University Subsidies To Napster, Ruckus Earlier this week, we wrote about how Congress had slipped a provision into the Higher Education Act that would require universities to put in place a plan to have published policies on unauthorized file sharing and to also “develop a plan” to offer “legal alternatives” such as Napster or Ruckus. Of course, some would point out that many file sharing systems, by themselves are legal. It’s just that some people are using them for things that break the law. Really, what this bill represents is a gov’t backed subsidy for Napster and Ruckus, forcing colleges to offer them even if their students don’t want it. It’s not clear, at all, why Congress should be in the business of demanding a particular type of music delivery system be offered on college campuses. The announcement of the bill resulted in plenty of attention, leading the House committee that was debating the Act to distribute a “fact sheet” that is anything but factual. It accused those criticizing the bill of being “supporters of intellectual property theft.” That is not the case at all. In fact, it’s rather insulting that Congress would automatically assume that anyone who questions why Congress is forcing universities to pay for commercial music distribution systems is a “supporter of intellectual property theft.”

Of course, when the committee is calling anyone who opposes such a plan as being a supporter of theft, it’s no surprise that they wouldn’t take any of the criticisms seriously and moved forward with the bill without any changes to the controversial section. They also dismissed the claims that universities who don’t sign up for Napster or Ruckus would lose financial aid funding, though, that’s clearly what the bill allows to happen — and you know that the RIAA and MPAA (and Napster and Ruckus, for that matter) will push to make it a viable threat.

Either way, it would be nice for Congressional supporters to answer this simple question: Why is it any part of Congress’s business to mandate that universities sign up for a commercial music distribution service?
