Take a look at this second Life: Money Checks In, But It Doesn’t Check Out In addition to all of the hype surrounding Second Life, particularly when a company announces that it’s setting up a business inside the virtual world, a lot is made of the fact that the game seems to have a sizable economy, in which fortunes can be won or lost. Unfortunately, like everything else surrounding it, such as its population of users, the facts aren’t so cut and dry. While there may be a fair amount of plain vanilla trade (i.e. one person selling a good to another), the economy doesn’t seem to support anything financially sophisticated. One speculator thought he saw an arbitrage opportunity based on the interest rates paid to deposits in in-game banks. But while the math worked out, the plan failed. The investor soon discovered that it was difficult to collect on his investment, and that many of the people with whom he was doing business turned out not to be trustworthy. So while it was theoretically possible to rack up big profits in Linden Dollars, on paper, actually getting them and then converting them back to real currency proved difficult. Reflecting on his experience, his conclusion is that the economy is essentially a pyramid scheme, where it’s easy to pump money in and see it inflate, but it’s difficult to cash out. Of course, if you’re still interested in setting up a business in Second Life, how about starting a collection service?.Did you know that Second means abbr. s Mathematics. Bill Gates appears on The Daily Show - Ars Technica

However Last night, on the eve of Windows Vista's release, Bill Gates knew that he had to get out and promote Vista to a nationwide audience. …Jon Stewart asks Bill Gates his password. Others have talked about vista: The OS That Does Less, Costs More, And Can’t Protect Squat Security holes aren’t the only problems facing Windows Vista — security researcher Peter Gutmann has penned an article (via Against Monopoly) analyzing how Microsoft has decided to integrate a number of cumbersome DRM solutions which collectively degrade the performance and capability of the new OS. According to Gutmann, the Vista Content Protection specification could “very well constitute the longest suicide note in history” — just to integrate a technology Bill Gates himself admits is rife with dysfunction. To lock down HD content, Vista limits the number of connectivity options for customers, in some cases actually degrading image quality — incurring additional licensing costs that drives up the price of the OS for consumers. Gutmann suggests these decisions will have some collateral damage as well; the hoops hardware vendors now need to navigate could mean a rise in graphics card cost with a subsequent decrease in performance. The only reason Microsoft would risk so badly annoying consumers and hardware vendors is if they’re harboring dreams of locking down the distribution channel a la iTunes in order to corner the market on home distribution of high-definition content. Of course if history is any guide, the DRM efforts will ultimately fail anyway, meaning the extra effort simply contributes to a more expensive, less efficient and less useful operating system for the user.Did you know that Vista means a distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees. Okay, okay you may have heard on the news: physician Finds Experimental Cure For Poisoned Family On Google Scholar A few weeks ago, I was a little surprised in talking to a friend of mine who is a surgeon, when he explained to me that before he goes into a surgery for something he hasn’t done in a while (or has never done), he’ll often poke around on Google for a bit to refresh his memory of how such surgeries are supposed to go. He pointed out that his expertise is in surgery in general, and Google is often the fastest and best way to refresh his memory on specific situations he might encounter. Apparently, he’s not alone among the medical profession in going to Google when a physician isn’t sure what to do in a specific situation — and it may have saved some lives recently. Over the last week or so here in Northern California, the press has been reporting on the case of six family members admitted to the hospital for eating poisonous mushrooms. The oldest person in the group eventually died, but the rest were saved. That, obviously, isn’t much of a technology story, but Search Engines WEB writes in to point us to a more detailed article in a local paper that notes that the doctors working on the case found something of an experimental treatment by searching the literature on Google Scholar, and then plowing through tremendous red tape involving pharmaceutical companies, the FDA and local hospitals in order to treat the patients successfully. There are plenty of sources that medical professionals can use these days, so it’s interesting that Google is turning out to be so useful. For all the talk about how the web may be full of bad medical information, it appears that even doctors (and some healthy patients) are finding out that it can be pretty useful at times. Gowers Report On Intellectual Property Too Balanced For Its Own Good

Filed under: Uncategorized — gates @ 12:07 pm

We also can look at this information to… There’s been a lot of speculation on the “Gowers Report” in the UK, looking at how intellectual property laws should be modernized. Most of the talk has focused on the question of copyright extension, since some copyrights on pop songs performed 50 years ago may soon hit the public domain. As was widely expected, the report suggests that copyright not be extended — which is why the British recording industry is already suggesting the government should ignore the report.

However, there’s a lot more in the report, and not all of it’s good. It tries to walk the fine line of balancing things out for both the industry and consumers — but in doing so makes the false assumption that this is some sort of fight between each side, and what one gives up, the other gains. That’s not true, even though it seems like many people on both sides believe it is. However, it should be pretty clear that that’s a dangerous assumption. Any industry grows not by fighting with its customers, but by providing them value so that both sides are happy with the transaction. This fight over copyrights isn’t based on who gets more control. The idea of “balance” creates the wrong way of thinking about things. However, in the name of balance, the report suggests increasing the penalties for certain copyright violations (including making punishment for downloading much harsher), while crafting “exceptions” for personal copying (though, of course, there are those in the industry whining about those exceptions too). The more the focus is on this false balance, the more you’re going to have each side pulling for their own minor claims, rather than recognizing that they need to rethink how they view the space. That means, everyone is going to fight about their own exceptions and amendments, leading to a bureaucratic nightmare that helps no one.

There are apparently (though this doesn’t seem to be covered in great detail anywhere) some articles saying the report also says that UK patent law needs to be reformed. The article is quite vague, only saying that there should be better support for companies doing business outside of the UK in such places like India and China. It mentions, again, the idea that balance is important, saying: “The ideal IP system creates incentives for innovation, without unduly limiting access for consumers and follow-on innovators.” That’s true, but also somewhat meaningless. Of course that’s what an ideal IP system does — but does the current system succeed? What if the system doesn’t create the proper incentives and does a better job hindering innovation than helping it? And, therein lies the other big problem with “balance.” It talks up a lot of fluff, and in the end, pleases no one. This is pretty cool what Good Would Spy Coins Be… Even If They Did Exist There’s been a lot of talk lately about the use of RFID chips in various things like tires or sneakers, and how these technologies could be misused to spy on your whereabouts. Of course, what’s never clearly explained is how effective such a solution would be. RFIDs tend to have very limited range. Still, with so much talk about using RFIDs to spy on people, is it any wonder that press quickly jumped on the story about the US Defense Department is warning American contractor employees to be careful when they get foreign change. The story claims that a few contractors discovered that the Canadian coins they had, held RFID chips placed inside. However, no one seems to have a good answer to explain what this would be useful for. A reader would need to be quite close to the coins to get a read on the tags, at which point you wonder exactly what the benefit really is. Also, since change tends to be spent or passed around pretty rapidly (with no indication back to whoever put the chips in the coins), it might not be even remotely effective in following an individual. Perhaps the answer is that it didn’t really happen. Another news report on the topic claims that there were some concerns, but an investigation of the coins found no transmitters. That source claims the report about the RFID coins was simply false, and never should have been reported. No matter which story is actually true, it seems like lots of people are eager to jump onto any claim of RFID-based spying, even if there’s no technological reason to be concerned.Did you know that Coins means a small piece of metal, usually flat and circular, authorized by a government for use as money.
